Predicting stiffness and strength of birch pulp:Polylactic acid composites

2016

This paper studies failure of birch pulp–polylactic acid composites. Stiffness and strength are calculated using the theory of short fibre composites and the results are compared to experimental data. The results differed from the experimental values by 0–6%. With less aligned fibres the short fibre theory is not feasible. The performance of the 40 wt% birch pulp – polylactic acid composite is predicted with X-ray microtomography based finite element modelling, and the results are compared with experiments. Stiffness results differed from experiments by 1–17% . By adding into the models a third material phase representing the interface between the fibres and the matrix, the stress–strain c…

Frequency comb generation by electro-optic modulation and applications

2020

The work presented in this thesis relates the development of a dual frequency comb spectrometer based on the electro-optic modulation of a continuous wave laser, and its utilisation for spectroscopic applications in the near- and mid-infrared.Since their discovery in the 1960s, frequency combs have revolutionised the physics, especially in metrology but also in spectroscopy, which lead to the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2005. In this domain of applications, dual frequency comb spectrometers are known to be complex to develop and use. A possibility to bypass these constraints is to build the spectrometer with electro-optic modulators. This particular architecture makes the experimental setup e…

Actively mode-locked fibre ring laser based on in-fibre acousto-optic amplitude modulation

2011

Recent advances in the development of all-fibre amplitude modulators have led to the implementation of a series of different actively mode-locked fibre lasers [1–4]. In-fibre acousto-optic modulation based on intermodal coupling induced my a standing flexural acoustic wave permits the implementation of broad bandwidth (1.5 nm), high modulation depth (0.72), low-insertion-loss (0.75 dB) all-fibre amplitude modulators that operate in the MHz frequency range. The experimental characterization of a laser with the configuration depicted in Fig. 1 (a) as a function of the radio frequency voltage that controls the modulator (see Fig. 1 (b)), the length of the Erbium doped fibre (EDF), and the opti…

Parabolic pulse generation and applications

2009

Parabolic pulses in optical fibers have stimulated an increasing number of applications. We review here the physics underlying the generation of such pulses as well as the results obtained in a wide-range of experimental configurations.

Actively mode-locked all-fiber laser by 5 MHz transmittance modulation of an acousto-optic tunable bandpass filter

2018

Active mode-locking of an all-fiber ring laser by transmittance modulation of an in-fiber acousto-optic tunable bandpass filter (AOTBF) is reported. Cavity loss modulation is achieved by full acousto-optic mode re-coupling cycle induced by standing flexural acoustic waves. The modulator permits the implementation of 28 dB of nonresonant light suppression, 1.4 nm of modulation bandwidth, 74% of modulation depth and 4.11 dB of optical loss in a 72.5 cm-long all-fiber configuration. The effects of the modulated AOTBF on the laser performance are investigated. Transform-limited optical pulses of 8.8 ps temporal width and 6.0 W peak power were obtained at 4.87 MHz repetition rate.

Q-switching of an erbium-doped fibre laser modulated by a Bragg grating fixed to a piezoelectric

2003

The performance of the Q-switched erbium-doped fibre laser with two fibre Bragg gratings as cavity mirrors was theoretically analysed, employing a set of rate equations for the ion populations and the photon flux inside the cavity. The simulation considers a system where the pulsed laser emission is produced by the temporal modulation of a Bragg grating fixed to a piezoelectric and operating in the 1550 nm spectral region. The temporal evolution of different frequency components of the laser emission produced is governed by the instantaneous overlap between the two gratings. Theoretical results are in agreement with previously reported experimental values.

Absence of an aging-related increase in fiber type grouping in athletes and non-athletes

2020

The ageing-related loss of muscle mass is thought to be partly attributable to motor neuron loss and motor unit remodelling that result in fibre type grouping. We examined fibre type grouping in 19- to 85-year-old athletes and non-athletes and evaluated to which extent any observed grouping is explained by the fibre type composition of the muscle. Since regular physical activity may stimulate reinnervation, we hypothesised that fibre groups are larger in master athletes than in age-matched non-athletes. Fibre type grouping was assessed in m. vastus lateralis biopsies from 22 young (19-27 years) and 35 healthy older (66-82 years) non-athletes, and 14 young (20-29 years), 51 middle-aged (38%6…

Polarisation attraction and incoherent modulation instability in optical fibers

2006

This thesis, entitled « Polarisation attraction and incoherent modulation instability in optical fibers », presents a theoretical and experimental study of two new processes from the nonlinear optic in optical fibers domain. We introduce in the first chapter some theoretical notions useful for the comprehension of this work. Then, we demonstrate in the second chapter that it is possible to generate some modulation instability in optical fibers using a partially coherent optical beam. We highlight and observe the main properties of the phenomenon. We study the polarisation attraction in isotropic fibers process in the third chapter. Our work proves the existence of the phenomenon, and permit…

EFFETTI DI NANOTUBI SULLA RESISTENZA A FATICA DI BIOCOMPOSITI A FIBRE CORTE RANDOM

2019

In order to comply with the recent regulations in terms of environmental protection, biocomposites reinforced with natural fibers are increasingly used in the automotive sector, for the replacement of synthetic materials in semi-structural applications as panels, filling material, coating, dashboards, etc. The good mechanical performances of these materials, mixed with low weight and low cost, also make it possible to minimize the weight of the vehicle, and therefore consumption, but also the relative production costs. These are composites with random short fiber appreciated for their good stiffness, generally well above that of the matrix alone. Due to the peculiar "transverse" damage phen…

ANALISI NUMERICA E SPERIMENTALE DELL’INFLUENZA DELLA QUALITA’ INTERFACCIALE SULLE PROPRIETA’ MECCANICHE DI MATERIALI COMPOSITI

2020
